Reference – Pressure vessel

Challenge

A filament wound Type IV pressure vessel made of CFRP was to be designed in such a way that, if possible, even the prototypes can already withstand the essential approval tests (burst pressure, vibration stress, and impact). For better economy, the vessel should be designed with as thin walls as possible.

Method

First, a numerical 3D model of the vessel structure with a parameterized variable winding structure was built. Depending on the load case, both static and dynamic simulation methods were used. Depending on the load case, both static and dynamic simulation methods were used. To calculate the vibration load case, the complete test setup was included in the calculation.

Result

The result is an impact-tolerant pressure vessel designed according to the standard, which can be manufactured with minimal use of materials. The approval tests are still ongoing.
